As his teacher I am always impressed by this young man. Being new to a school can sometimes be difficult, but he jumped right in and has done very well. He consistently displays citizenship by taking care of his community – both his classmates and our room. We are looking forward to a great semester!

As her teacher I am always impressed by this young lady. She has a strong work ethic and consistent moral compass. She doesn’t need anyone to remind her what the right thing to do is – because she’s already doing it (whether anyone is watching or otherwise)! We are very fortunate to have her in our class as an exemplary role model.

As her teacher I am very impressed by this young lady. She has a quiet way of showing compassion for others. The care she exhibits for her younger siblings is commendable. Field Trip!

Fifth grade took their third annual field trip to Lee University today to learn more about future possibilities and realize that college is a reality for them if they work hard and apply themselves! Just look at all of the fun we had!

The students enjoyed a ride on the Lee Trolley, a pep-talk from the Admissions office (courtesy of Ms. Casey Dean), a tour of campus with the amazing Mr. Clayton, a performance from Kingdom Players, a Q & A panel with a professor (Dr. Bill Estes) as well as a Dorm-Life expert and a current student, all-you-can-eat buffet style lunch in the Dining Hall, and playtime in the gymnasium with Lee's Basketball team. All in all it was a great day!

Career Day!

Krystal's manager Craig MacLamore came and talked about the realities of working in fast food and how it is a great first job, especially for high school students!

Mrs. Kim Wills came from Cleveland State Community College to talk about all of the opportunities that are out there to further our students' education and give them a chance at being successful in life.

Mr. Nate McKay, movie director, spoke to the students about all of people and jobs that go in to making a movie production a reality.

Representative Kevin Brooks met with our class in the auditorium to give them an idea of all that he does working in government and answered all of their questions about his job.

Many of us are familiar with the classic Aretha Franklin song about a young woman asking for a little respect. The Student of the Month for September is known for many of her good qualities, but this month her peers nominated her for Student of the Month because of her outstanding RESPECT for herself and others. I couldn't agree more! Here are some of the students’ thoughts on what RESPECT is, and about our spotlight student:

Respect is…

“…something we should all do.”
“…helping and being nice.”
“…pay attention to the person who is talking“
“…a thing that shows attention and appreciation!”
“…when you look up to someone.”
“…to treat people fairly.”
“…caring about others and treating people how you want to be treated.”

“I think respect is when you listen, pay attention, follow directions, and when you’re nice to other people. Respect means you show other people your nice personality. Respect is a really big deal. [This student] should be Student of the Month because she shows respect to other people and she really pays attention. She really deserves it. [This student] is a really respectful person.”

Welcome to Fifth Grade!!!

Students, it’s here, your final year in elementary school - the launch pad to middle school life! It’s going to be a busy year, filled with lots of learning and fun. I’m very excited to see familiar faces and am looking forward to getting to know all of the new ones. I hope that you have enjoyed your summer, full of fun and restful activities. I have been busy working at summer camp in Maryland (www.sandyhillcamp.com), and am looking forward to getting back to Arnold. Get ready for the best school year yet!

Parents, I thank you for entrusting your child to me 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. I believe strongly that a child’s success in school is linked to parent-teacher communication. This classroom blog is just one venue that I use to communicate so feel free to comment on any posting. Wide-Ruled Notebook Paper

1 Pencil pouch (note: not box)
1 tub disinfectant wipes
1 backpack (no wheels)
1 spiral notebook

The school provides all of the crayons, markers, glue, scissors, etc. that your child will need. I recommend stocking up on plenty of paper and pencils at the start of the year while prices are the cheapest because you'll need it all year!
